Vintage gelatin silver print, 12 x 9 1/2 in. (30.5 x 24.1 cm)

To make this unique photographic object, Josephson first photographed an 8x10 inch film holder with an 8x10 camera which he fitted with 8x10 gelatin silver paper instead of film. This created a direct negative image on that paper. He then put that photograph upside down in the same film holder he had photographed and repeated the process, photographing the film holder again but now with a negative image of itself inside. The resulting photograph, another direct “negative” shows the film holder as a negative with a “positive” image of the film holder inside it. He then framed it in the film holder he had photographed.
